AN Italian restaurant has been told that ‘major improvement’ is necessary following a damning food hygiene inspection.

Inspectors from Barrow Borough Council paid a visit to Salvana’s in Barrow’s Cavendish Street to carry out a food hygiene inspection.

The inspection, which took place on April 8, found the Italian restaurant was in need of ‘major improvement’.

Inspectors awarded the restaurant a score of one, labelling the hygienic handling of food including and the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building as ‘generally satisfactory’.

The management of food safety in the restaurant was rated as 'major improvement necessary’.

Councillor Tony Callister, Barrow Borough Council's spokesperson for licensing and public protection, said the council works closely with businesses to advise them ono how to achieve higher ratings in their next inspections.

He said: "Businesses that handle food are routinely inspected under the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme to ensure they comply with current legislation on food safety.

"Salvana's Restaurant in Cavendish Restaurant of Barrow was inspected on April 8 2022, and on this occasion was awarded one star.

“Where there are issues, we work closely with businesses, and we advise them on how to achieve higher ratings in their next inspections. The business will now have the opportunity to make the required improvements ahead of a re-inspection."

Salvana’s was first opened in 1992 in the heart of Barrow town centre.

Its website reads: “Alongside our wonderful team, some of whom have been with us for over 20 years, we work hard together as a family to create an informal, relaxed atmosphere.

“We hope to give our friends and fabulous customers a consistently high level of food and service at an affordable price without compromising quality of produce. The successful formula sees generations of families through our doors every day.”

The Mail attempted to contact Salvana’s for a comment but was unable to receive a response before this publication went to print.
