HOSPITAL bosses have reviewed security at Barrow's mortuary after an electrician was convicted of sexually assaulting dead bodies in Kent.

The NHS ordered all health trusts, including Morecambe Bay, to urgently review security practices at morgues after David Fuller was convicted of sexually abusing more than 100 female corpses at two hospitals where he worked.

NHS trusts were asked to urgently review CCTV coverage, all entry and access points controlled by swipe access, risk assessments and appropriate DBS check applications.

The trust's mortuary manager has now recommended the installation of more CCTV cameras at morgues in Barrow and Lancaster following the review.

The review found there were well-maintained, motion-activated cameras at Barrow's mortuary that alert the mortuary team if any movement is detected.

Only the mortuary staff review footage on a regular basis but the general office, local security management specialist and head of resilience also have access were an incident to arise.

There are three areas not covered by CCTV in both mortuaries - the front doors, the family viewing area and the post mortem room.

There are double-sided fridges but only mortuary staff have access to the second door of the fridge within the postmortem room.

Details of the review were released in papers for a meeting of the University Hospitals Trust of Morecambe Bay's board of directors.

Summing up actions to be taken, the report said: "The mortuary manager confirmed that the fridges into the post-mortem rooms have locks which can be locked off ensuring that only mortuary staff have access to that side of the fridges.

"This action was implemented by mortuary staff as of November 8 and is included in the securing of the mortuary when staff are leaving.

"The mortuary manager requested additional CCTV on the front entrances for the mortuary which the local security management specialist agreed with and this request has been made to the facilities manager to add this to the existing CCTV system in place."

Fuller, then 67, was sentenced to a whole life order last year for murdering two women and abusing scores of dead bodies.
