THIS week I, Bald Foodie Guy, decided to try something a bit more exotic.

I was shopping in Aldi when I spotted something that is a bit different to my usual purchases, it is something that I have never had before.

It was ostrich steak burgers by The Lions Kingdom.

You get two steak burgers in a pack, and for every pack that is sold, 2p gets sent to charities that are protecting wild lion populations.

The pack was £2.69 so it was quite expensive, but it is ostrich at the end of the day, so it is to be expected.

The packaging states that the burgers contain 90 per cent ostrich meat, and that it was produced and packed in South Africa.

It also said for best results to stick them under the grill for three minutes on each side, so that is what I decided to do.

After getting the vac-packed burgers out of the box and plastic packaging I was hit with the smell of onions, it smelt quite nice though.

This isn't my first brush with exotic meats, I went to Australia in 2009 with my good lady before we had kids.

I bought a 1986 Toyota Tarago taxi and I took all of the seats out and put a bed in the back, and then we drove all around Australia for 10 months til we ran out of money and came home.

I had kangaroo burgers while I was there and I really didn't like them at all, so I was hoping that these ostrich burgers will be nicer.

After grilling the burgers looked quite dry, but I was excited to get into it.

It was very dry and not my cup of tea if I am being honest.

I could taste the spices but they weren't winning me over.

It definitely did not taste like steak.

I can see why they needed to put spices in it, to give it a bit of flavour.

If it didn't have the spices then I don't think it would be that good.

I'm glad that I've tried it though, but I wont be buying them again.

You have got to try new things, variety is the spice of life.

I tried adding it to a toasted bun with ketchup and burger sauce, but it still wasn't great.

You have got to try it yourself and see what you think, it is not comparable to any other meat."

I'll give them a six out of 10.
