A HISTORIC pathway that connects Barrow and Walney is due to be revitalised.

Plans have been put forward to repair a causeway that stretches across Walney Channel allowing easy access for walkers at low tide.

The causeway, which dates back to the early 20th Century, has fallen into disrepair.

But Cumbria County Council is due to carry out significant repairs to the causeway.

It is said to still be well used by tourists and Barrow residents.

The council has applied to the Marine Management Organisation to be allowed access to carry out the repair work.

The plan said: "[The causeway] connects Barrow in Furness with Walney Island along a causeway which was built by the Broughton Estate in the first half of the 20th century to carry its workers across Walney Channel.

"It is now in a state of disrepair in various sections due to years of neglect by the estate. As the local highway authority we have a duty to maintain some structures carrying public rights of way in order to make them safe/good.

"As this footpath is evidenced to still get used by a number of locals and tourists we intend to carry out the remedials.

"In order to do this we propose to carry out works.

"These works would include pre-fabricating 4 x reinforced concrete posts and 1 x 6ft x3ft concrete slab and storing them close off site until low tide so they can be installed at the appropriate time.

"If this section of the path is successfully completed we would then look to improve the full route throughout."

The work would be carried out over a period of two days, according to the application.
