A CONTAINER of radioactive waste left the port at Barrow for its journey to Australia.
The container was bearing waste from Sellafield, the only site in the country which can deal with all types of nuclear waste.
Following successful loading operations, the specialist nuclear vessel Pacific Grebe departed its home port on Thursday carrying a single flask of vitrified intermediate level waste from the Sellafield site in West Cumbria.
The vessel will travel to an Australian port, from where it will be transported to an interim waste store at the Lucas Heights facility.
Two tonnes of nuclear waste will be sent to Australia this year from the United Kingdom as part of an agreement reached months ago.
The transport company, Nuclear Transport Solutions, say the shipment is being carried out in full compliance with all UK, Australian and international regulations, and subject to issue of all relevant permits and licences.
