COUNCILLORS are appealing for residents' help to tackle speeding through the town.

Ulverston councillors Andrew Butcher, Helen Irving and Amanda Rigg are taking action after receiving numerous complaints in recent weeks.

In a letter sent out to those living along some of the worst known stretches for speeding, people are being asked how they think this could be best addressed and what solutions they want to see.

Councillor Butcher said: “We have been out listening to people across Ulverston in recent weeks and residents have been voicing their concerns about speeding through the town. There is a real concern that the problem is only going to get worse if nothing is done. That’s why, together, we’re determined to get this sorted."

Councillor Irving said: “We want to find out where the worst parts of the town are for speeding and what residents want to see to help tackle this. Their views are at the heart of this. Together, working with our local community, we can make a real difference towards making our roads safer for everyone”.

Councillor Rigg said: “Whether it’s reducing the current speed limits or helping to establish local community speed-watch groups or installing vehicle-activated signs which light up at speeding drivers, all views are welcome, and all options are on the table. We want local residents to get in touch and have their say. Then we can start the ball rolling and clamp down on speeding drivers."

The move to tackle speeding in the town comes after the three councillors partnered with Furness MP Simon Fell to rollout the ‘Twenty’s Plenty’ campaign in recent weeks.

Mr Fell said: “Anti social motorists, particularly speeding, is something which local people in Ulverston tell me is a priority to solve.

“At my recent Surgery Tour I heard from residents about their concerns, and suggestions for solutions to address this problem. That’s why we launched my ‘20’s Plenty campaign’, and conducted surveys in areas such as Church Walk.

“Working together with my colleagues in Ulverston, and local people, we are determined to take action to clamp down on anti social motorists through our town.”

A special surgery is being held by the three councillors at Ulverston Sports and Social Club, Priory Road, on Monday January 31 from 6pm until 7pm.
