As Christmas approached in 1992 schoolchildren from across the Furness and South Lakeland area were getting into the spirit of things with a feast of pantomime performances.

From Barrow to Flookburgh they were donning fancy dress to bring a Christmas cracker full of fun and frolics.

The pupils of Flookburgh Primary School performed a three-night run of Dick Whittington.

The cast included everyone from Dick and the cat, to musicians, dancers, a choir and the citizens of London.

At Barrow's Dane Ghyll School there were several different productions.

They included The Pied Piper and a good old favourite, Cinderella.

The shows provided a beautiful selection of memorable scenes captured by The Mail's photographers.

Father Christmas was in Barrow in November 1992 to remind residents that Christmas was only six weeks away.

Wide-eyed spectators aged from six to 60 stood on a cold and windswept street corner to see the special visitor arrive and herald another magical season of peace and goodwill.

Also in 1992 Father Christmas went to Dalton Road at Barrow on December 19 to meet shoppers and to help Furness Lions with their charities appeal.

And he paid another visit to Furness in 1992. He met youngsters who were attending the RNLI fayre held at Forum 28 in the town.

Also in 1992 a group of senior citizens produced their own version of Cinderella at the Michaelson House hotel in Barrow.

The cast was MC Pat Drowett; Ugly Sisters Bert Brady and Brian Milburn; the fairy was played by Elsie Beckett; Buttons was played by Kath McKenna; the Fairy Prince was Rita Milburn; Santa was played by Rose Harris and the Baron by Ken Caine.

Lindal and Marton School pupils enjoyed a Christmas party with a difference in 1992 - the pupils dressed in medieval costumes for the event.
