A Children in Need fundraising challenge which stopped in Ulverston has raised more than £2 million.

The Great Rickshaw Relay Challenge, as seen on BBC One last week, saw presenter Matt Baker and five inspirational young people cycle across the UK for the 2021 fundraising challenge.

One of those young people was 20-year-old Harrison Holmes, of Ulverston.

He cycled from Windermere to his hometown to raise money for the charity.

Harrison has endured many challenges since birth, battling a serious bowel infection at one week old, weighing just 1lb 8oz.

He had two brain bleeds and more life-threatening infections such as septicaemia twice, a heart duct operation, tracheostomy and hernia operations before he was even eight months old.

He also has cerebral palsy and chronic lung disease.

The Great Rickshaw Relay team has so far raised £2,019,978 for BBC Children in Need, as officially announced on Morning Live yesterday.

Matt Baker has now raised more than £43m in total for the charity over the course of 11 years with the Rickshaw Challenge.

Speaking of this incredible achievement, Matt Baker said: “Rickshaw has been a huge part of my life over the last 11 years and I’m over the moon we’ve managed to find a way of it happening again, showing viewers how their donations help change young lives.

"Cycling with Tom, Rainbow, Liv, Harrison and Millie was great – these young people showed sheer courage, dedication and they all inspired me and I’m sure, everyone watching at home.

"Thank you so much to the public for their generous donations, I am ecstatic with the total funds raised so far.”

Since 2011, we have seen Matt Baker and young people tackle routes located across the UK including Edinburgh to Cambridge and Llandudno to Reading.

This year, the team cycled just over 142 miles between them, travelling through Bristol, Manchester, Liverpool, Ulverston and then taking a nostalgic turn, finishing The Great Rickshaw Relay Challenge in Edinburgh, where it all started back in year one of Matt’s Rickshaw journey.
