PREPARATIONS are under way to send Scouts from Cumbria to the 25th World Scout Jamboree in South Korea.
The 18 representatives from the county will join 40,000 other Scouts from all over the world for the event in summer 2023.
The county has been allocated two patrols as part of the UK contingent, with the young people meeting and learning from Scouts representing almost every country on earth as part of a truly global village.
The county unit, which also includes Scouts from the Isle of Man and North West Guides, is led by Liam Edgley and Heidi Jones, who impressed the local selection panel with their experience and passion for providing amazing experiences for Cumbria’s youth.
Cumbria Scouts will be hosting a selection event on the weekend of the November, 27 and selecting 18 representatives.
Once chosen, the successful candidates will be supported by Liam, Heidi and the wider team to raise funds to attend and come together as a strong team before travelling halfway across the globe to experience a brand-new country, make new friends for life and discover the similarities they hold with young people from different cultures and backgrounds.
Liam Edgley said: “The World Scout Jamboree in South Korea will be a life changing experience. I’m really proud to be a part of this journey and proud to help the young people develop skills and make friends across the globe.”
Eddie Ward, county commissioner for Cumbria Scouts, said: “A huge part of Scouting is about breaking down the barriers that keep us apart and discovering that, no matter where we’re from, we share so many more similarities than differences. With everything that’s happened over the recent months and year’s it’s perhaps more important than ever for Cumbria’s young people to meet and learn from not only overseas Scouts but also each other.
“Heidi and Liam are fantastic representatives for Cumbria Scouts, and I wish them the best of luck as they begin their Jamboree journey”.
Applications to take part in this once in a lifetime event are open to any Cumbrian Scouts aged between 14 and 17 in Summer 2023, with information on how to apply for the selection event email wsj@cumbriascouts.org.uk.
