THERE has been a divided reaction between the community after a pub fundraising event for Afghan refugees was a big hit.

Furness Refugee Support hosted the event at the Hope and Anchor in Ulverston on Friday night where they collected money to help support refugees coming to the area.

Karen Bell, one of the music acts performing, described the event as "great, lively, and fun" in the packed public house.

Anthony Perkins said: "Should be helping them over in Afghanistan not bringing them here being another burden to British taxpayers who'll foot the bill for these un-wants who haven't contributed absolutely anything."

Charlie Dowthwaite said: "Very good on the group who provided the music and I hope there was sufficient funds raised to support refugees and having said that it is important to support refugees, financially or otherwise, continually of course.

"Say it loud and say it clear, refugees are welcome here. (to the UK)"

"Refugees are not a burden to the British taxpayer nor are they a strain on the NHS either.

"Also they are not causing the present housing crisis nor are they causing imperialist wars either, in fact, it is because of imperialist wars that is the reason refugees flee and that is why we should all be calling for open borders and allow free flow of migration.

"What is a burden on the taxpayer is racist border controls, the monarchy, the bosses of big corporations in receipt of six figure salaries each year and the tax dodgers who get away without paying tax to the tune of billions each year."

"They're being flown over here, put up in hotels full board and being rehoused by the government so there's more deserving causes out there."

Norman G said: "Glad to see the money raised will fully find these refugees houses, care, education etc. Or are you expecting the tax payer to do that for you?"

claphamomnibus said: "The comments are again overflowing with the milk of human kindness I see.

"It's ok to raise taxes to make up the short fall caused by big businesses not paying their share but raise them to help the most desperate, and the bigoted are out in force, pathetic"
