A BARROW woman has been jailed after carrying out a 'frenzied' knife attack that left her victim thinking she was going to die.

The court heard Dawn Goodwin stabbed Kerry Felsing in the arm, the thigh, the lower neck and twice in the back.

"I know now I'm lucky to be alive," said Ms Felsing in a statement read out in court.

"I have been much more secluded [since the attack].

"I don't trust people as much.

"I have not been taking care of myself at all, I do not feel safe."

Prosecuting, Cecilia Pritchard said the incident in Ms Felsing's flat in Barrow's Egerton Court occurred after the pair had spent a number of hours in each other's company.

Ms Pritchard said a disagreement between them led to the alcohol-fuelled attack by Goodwin, 52, also of Egerton Court.

She described police later finding 'large quantities' of blood around a bed in the flat and in the hallway.

Preston Crown Court heard Ms Felsing left the flat and other members of the public called emergency services for her.

It heard Goodwin herself also called police but falsely claimed 'there were a number of people trying to bust into her flat'. She also called the ambulance service and outlined there being a 'life or death situation' but swore when asked to give further details.

The victim was taken to Furness General Hospital and then Royal Preston Hospital. Among her injuries was a collapsed lung.

Recorder Close said Ms Felsing was 'fortunate' not to have suffered lasting damage and 'devastating' physical consequences from the incident on December 15 of last year.

In mitigation, Kimberley Obrusik said Goodwin had suffered with emotionally unstable personality disorder most of her life and had used alcohol as a way of coping with this.

However, Ms Obrusik said Goodwin did not receive a diagnosis for this - and was not referred to treatment for it - until 2020.

Recorder Close noted Goodwin's childhood was 'unstable, chaotic and abusive' and that her mental health difficulties were not properly diagnosed until later in her life.

Goodwin pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and Recorder Close sentenced her to four years and nine months in prison with an additional two years on licence.
