RESIDENTS of a care home have been getting creative by making lanterns for an upcoming festival with the theme 'My Favourite Things'.

Staff and residents at Elmhurst residential care home, in Ulverston have been having fun making lanterns for the Ulverston Lantern festival that is happening tomorrow.

The theme for 2021 is ‘My Favourite Things’ which gives the hundreds of keen lantern-makers the option to create any lantern they would like.

One residents from the care home made a pig to represent her love of bacon, another made a bell as he was a bell ringer for many years. Some residents are still busy finishing off their lanterns to join the parade too.

Karen Shepherd, registered manager of Elmhurst said: “We are very proud of all the hard work our residents and staff have put into their lanterns.

“We have had such fun making them and the category “My Favourite Things” has inspired some really innovative ideas!

“We joined the virtual parade last year but we are really looking forward to being able to contribute to the parade again this year.

“Whilst unfortunately we can’t join in with all the crowds, everyone is looking forward to seeing the parade go past and joining this lovely community celebration.”

Ulverston Lantern Festival usually attracts thousands of people to see the procession through the town and firework finale in Ford Park each September.

After last year's event was held virtually due to the Covid pandemic, organisers have now announced this year's procession will return in full force.

Lanterns will be departing around the town in four processions.

The first will leave at 6.45pm from Ulverston Parish Church, whilst another will also leave at 6.45pm from Croftlands Community Centre.

Others will leave at 7pm from The Auction Mart whilst the final procession will leave at 7.15pm from Ellie's Garden Centre.

The processions will come together at County Square at approximately 8pm.
