A FATHER and son duo are joining dozens of other motorists in driving 'old bangers' across the UK for charity.

Joseph and Paul Wojcik, from Barrow, are driving hundreds of miles in their renovated 1993 Rover Metro on Monday as part of the Veterans Banger Rally.

Paul, who joined the merchant navy when he left school, found out about the rally online, which was originally supposed to be held in Gibraltar.

The 63-year-old Ulverston Inshore Rescue volunteer asked his 31-year-old son Joseph if he would like to take on the challenge in December and the duo have been preparing ever since.

Mr Wojcik said: "We bought the car from someone in Warrington, stripped it down and put in new brakes and running gears. It was a bit of fun which we both really enjoyed doing.

"Next year it will be in Gibraltar as planned so that'll be a great trip to look forward to.

"We've been working on it for a while and got a canopy made for the top.

"We're really excited for Monday. It's something different which we've both never done before so we're excited to get going."

The route will take the rally drivers from Stafford onto Llandudno, Torquay, Skegness, Newcastle, Blackpool before finishing in Runcorn for prizegiving.

Drivers start with 500 points, the older the car and the lower the engine size, the more points you get.

The rally will raise funds for the Merchant Navy Charity’s, the British Legion, SAFA and The Seafarers Charity along the way.

Mr Wojcik said: "We will have some fun building memories for life and at the same time raising money for some of our beloved charities.

"It would be fantastic if people could donate what they could because every little helps. Please support us even if it’s only 50p it all adds up and goes to helping others in need." To donate visit: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/surf2gib2021.

The Wojcik's have also received great support from local businesses including Little Tony's Tyres who provided four tyres free of charge, Mia Bella Hairdressers who sponsored the accommodation while on the rally and other sponsors Steele’s Removals, Salvanna’s Restaurant, Southend Caravan Park, Darren for the roof bars and Graphix Signs for the logos.
