THE owner of an Indian takeaway in Barrow said he is upset after his shop window was smashed.

Fahsin Ahmed, who runs the Indian Takeaway ‘Mithali’ on Cavendish Street alongside his brother Evan, said he was angry after the damage was reportedly caused by a youth at around 5am on Sunday morning.

He said the incident was believed to have occurred after a young man, who was seen on CCTV wearing white pants/shorts, had been ejected and banned from Theatre Bar for his behaviour that night and had taken his frustration out by smashing the takeaway window.

Mr Ahmed, whose parents opened the Mithali restaurant in Dalton Road three decades ago, said: “I’m obviously pretty angry, but more upset than anything.

“If you're going on a night out you don’t need to go smashing and kicking shop windows in.

“Don’t cause another business upset and distress.

“Times have been difficult enough for local independent businesses and it’s not what they need.

“We are going to have to spend a lot to repair the window which will come out of our own pocket.

“There isn’t much point making insurance claims as we will only receive a couple hundred back.”

He said this was the first time it has happened.

“This has never happened before," he said.

“There is obviously fights on the street with it being the main strip where clubs are and especially when alcohol is involved but this is the first time it’s happened.

“The man even went further and kicked in the window of Dallas Chicken on the same street.

“Everyone is having it tough.

"What is the need to cause more financial suffering to businesses?”

Mr Ahmed said police were aware of the incident and are looking for the man.

Mithali is operating business as usual.
