READERS have said more needs to be done to make the county’s train stations more accessible.
Their comments came after it was announced that drop kerbs will be installed at Ulverston station to make it easier for people with additional mobility needs to get through the building.
The improvements are part of a £250,000 scheme by train operator Northern to help transform the railway.
Reader Suzie Nutterchops White posted: “I have a terrible time trying to cart my seven-year-old son, who’s autistic, down those steps in his disability pushchair when I have a bad back. Same goes for wheelchair users also. This should have been thought about a long time ago.”
Dawn McKellar replied: “We are always last on the list.
“My son is 20 and a wheelchair user and not much has improved since he was a child, to be honest.”
“[They] need to make all stations wheelchair friendly. Too many just aren’t.”
Suzie added: “Isn’t it terrible.”
Russell Holden said: “This IS the station where there are still two lots of steep steps to get to the south platform isn’t it?”
Margaret Sedgwick said: “You still won’t be able to get across to the other platforms without someone taking you across the tracks.”
Sharon Smith said: “They need to build a bridge for wheelchairs and scooters. That station is awful, so outdated. My dad struggles with steps so have to use Barrow station when he goes on the train.”
Sharon Thompson said: “I struggle with steps – I have to go down one at a time as I'm very unsteady on my legs.”
Margaret Sedgwick said: “I use a wheelchair and I can only use the station if there’s someone there to take me across, which means I can’t use early or late trains.
“Seems a bit of a waste to spend money on making the station building more accessible if you can’t get on a train.”
