Readers have had their say after South Cumbrian MPs pushed for reform of the council tax system following shocking findings by a county peer.
Former MP Dale Campbell-Savours is spearheading a campaign calling for reform to the council tax laws after it emerged that people living in a £52million property in Westminster pay less than people in the average house in Cumbria.
MPs in the area have both agreed that changes need to made.
Tracy Hawdon-was-Smith said: “Sounds about right. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.”
Dawn Robinson said: “Cumbria County Council set the majority charge on our council tax but what do we see from them for the money we pay?
“Barrow council and police services make up very small percentage of the council tax bill yet Barrow Council always get the blame when the cost goes up.”
Jonathan Davies said: “These are not shock findings. Some have been pushing the issue for years and the solution, just the media only listens to the few and pushes their narrative.
“A proportional property tax of 0.48% of the property value would deliver the same amount UK wide as raised by the council tax and mean big savings for many in Cumbria.”
Eddy Christopher said: “Surely it should be based on what the local services cost. Rural services cost more, so it’s only right that you pay more.”
Craig Johnston said: “Where does ability for pay come into that? Are you seriously saying someone on a council estate in a three-bedroom house should pay as much as a someone in Knightsbridge?”
