A GOOD samaritan went above and beyond to ensure a family of geese crossed the road safely after a ‘horrifying’ incident saw more than a dozen birds killed.

A kind-hearted mum alerted drivers after spotting a family of geese and goslings crossing the road in Mill Lane, Walney.

The mum was collecting her daughter from nursery when she noticed the family of birds walking across the road.

To prevent any accidents, the quick-thinker directed cars away from the geese so they could safely make it to the other side.

She said: “I was on my way to collect my daughter from nursery (on foot) and I noticed the geese and goslings walking on the road.

“At first I was surprised as I had never seen them on Mill Lane before so I uploaded a video hoping it would be shared so that people knew they were in the area and it would hopefully make them drive slower to keep them safe.

“After I had collected my daughter and we had set off in the car I noticed the geese were attempting to cross the road closer to the Promenade junction and I was worried that cars turning on to Mill Lane would not see them so I managed to get the attention of the drivers who were turning in and they gave the geese the space that they needed and they crossed safely.

“I later found out that someone then helped them across the Promenade to the Channel so I felt better know they had crossed safely.”

This act of kindness follows an incident in which a family of 13 well-known Barrow geese were ‘ploughed’ into and killed.

The geese were run over on Wednesday May 12 as they crossed Wilkie Road, near Barrow AFC’s ground, with several dying as a result.

Feathers and blood stains could be seen on the pavement at the time, with one resident describing the road as like a ‘murder scene.’
