A little girl who sparked a campaign with celebrities including members of Atomic Kitten and Alan Carr has been told she’s cancer free.

Oonagh Wilkinson, three, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at the age of just 19 months, undergoing surgery at Manchester Children’s Hospital to have two tumours removed.

She was given the all clear but that didn’t mean the rollercoaster was over as she had to undergo tests every three months, travelling back and forth between the family homes in Spain and Ulverston.

On Thursday the Wilkinson family got test results back from her two-year post-op visit, excitedly announcing that Oonagh is officially cancer free and has had the frequency of her check-ups reduced.

Oonagh's mum, Samantha Wilkinson, said: "You always think that it's going to be fine but there's always a little niggle, so it is really good news.

"It is two years since she had her surgery so it is a huge relief.

"We got the news that they are reducing her scans so she will be going to six-monthly scans which is great as well.

"It just means that we are heading in the right direction to the five-year cancer-free mark which is what everybody aims to without relapsing.

"I don't think she understands that it's such a big milestone for her, but she understands that she has had an illness, although she doesn't understand cancer as we understand it.

"Some of the appointments were at Christmas or summer when we would be in the UK anyway, but it was definitely challenging, particularly with Covid-19 in the last year."

For Oonagh's most recent trip, her dad Steve had to drive the journey from Spain to Ulverston as there were no flights to get her back home.

Oonagh's mum said: "When Steve drove over he went to France so it was three whole days of travelling to get to Ulverston.

"It was a mammoth task but they are sailing back directly to Spain. It's just such a long way, especially for a three-year-old, but she was good for him and she just sat and watched her movies.

The family have been the centre of a huge campaign to raffle off their £180,000 Ulverston home, with hopes to raise £40,000 for Neuroblastoma UK – with lots of help from celebrities across the UK.

Mrs Wilkinson said: "We have had Abs from Five and Ben of Phats & Small have shared the raffle for us this week."

Samantha posted Oonagh's good news to Instagram where Alan Carr said it was 'fantastic news' and Liz McClarnon showered the comment section with love heart emojis.
