PLANS to build a new offshore wind farm off the Barrow coast – capable of powering 1.4 million homes – has been welcomed by some... but not all.

The Crown Estate has announced six proposed new offshore wind projects in the waters around England and Wales.

The six projects together could deliver electricity for more than seven million homes.

William Enita posted: “More of an eyesore to look at off the coast. Makes going to the beach not worth it any more.”

Max Wandermare said: “But where precisely will these things be? Off the coast of Barrow? Next to the Isle of Man? Off Biggar Bank? Earnse Bay?”

Arron Edwards said: “They’re between 12 and 15 miles out, I wouldn’t worry in what direction. They’ll be tiny whichever view you look from.”

Ralph Bartel said: “Bring it on, let’s turn Barrow into an energy hub of the North West. Whilst the wind farms may not employ a large number of people directly in Barrow, the hotels, restaurants, and shops do very well out of the Danish contractors. As for spoiling the view, a view of what? You can hardly see them most of the time anyway.”

Norman Lester said: “Barrow wouldn’t be so bad if we got free electric. Why do they not just promote our beaches for the tourist market? That would fill hotels. Not too much like hard work. Put them in Morecambe as part of the new Eden project then you would have nuclear and wind projects for the holidaymakers.”

Jonny Walker said: “Can’t believe people are moaning about it. It’s great news for the town, not just for the people they will employ directly.”
