READERS reacted after The Mail reported that green water had been found near Furness Abbey.

The green liquid was spotted over the weekend and there are still questions as to how it came to be.

United Utilities said it was nothing to do with any work the company was currently doing but suggested it was most likely to be dye used to track water to ensure it was being drained into the right place.

A spokeswoman for United Utilities said: "The dye can be bought by anyone and is normally used to track a drain so it could be a local landowner or council looking for a water route."

The Mail readers reacted to the news, with many making pop culture references:

Adam David Parkinson: "It’s just trace dye as stated, nothing mysterious. I don’t think we are going to see the Toxic Avenger appear from the beck or mutated amphibious creatures with a penchant for martial arts either."

Sandy Turner: "Adam David Parkinson awh that's a shame! Could do with some excitement!"

Ben Whalley: "The way the world is at the moment I wouldn't be shocked if the Ninja Turtles rocked up from this ooze."

David Parry: "It looks like a chemical called copper, farmers use it for crops."

Jonny Falloon said: "Arnie on the run after battering the Predator."

Darren John McSweeney: "Soylent Green."

Katie Caine: "Someone said it must be trace dye but it was the weirdest thing I'd seen."

Shaen Campbell: "I've never seen anything like it."

Vanessa James: "Ninja Turtles I swear."

Martyn Taylor: "Tracer dye."
