FOLLOWING a warning from the home secretary, Cumbria Police have urged the public to be more cautious and that officers will use enforcement powers 'where necessary'.
Priti Patel wrote to police chiefs across the county in Tier 2 and 3 areas telling them to increase patrols in order to prevent rule breakers spreading the new strain of Coronavirus.
A spokesman for Cumbria Constabulary said: "The Health Protection Regulations in place are there to limit the spread of the virus.
"We must all be extra cautious, particularly in light of the new strain, in order to protect each other.
"In Cumbria, we have seen the majority of people within our communities comply with the Government’s guidance and I would urge people not to become complacent. By following the rules, you are helping save lives.
"Our officers will continue to be proactive in engaging, explaining and encouraging people to follow the Government’s Health Protection Regulations.
"Where necessary, officers will continue to use enforcement powers proportionately to help protect our communities. "
