A LIVE performance was streamed from The West End - to a classroom at Barrow school.

Played at The Old Vic theatre, and starring Walking Dead actor Andrew Lincoln, the production of A Christmas Carol was a reward for the resilience shown by youngsters at Chetwynde School.

The youngsters were treated to the show after showing a strong attitude towards learning and towards each other as Christmas approached.

The event was also a reward for their resilience during the recent months of difficulty under Covid restrictions.

The students from Year Seven had been studying A Christmas Carol in their drama lessons, while Year Nine pupils have studied the full text in English lessons.

Both classes were able to watch the West End theatre production's fun and professional performance.

Katherine Parkinson, head of performing arts, and Emma Lashmar, head of English organised the event.

They said: "We are passionate about theatre and the arts and understand how important it is to continue to expose our pupils to culture beyond the classroom.

"Events like this allow our pupils to engage fully with texts, as well as broadening cultural capital.

"We wish all Chetwynde families a very merry Christmas."

Chetwynde pupils and families have also been very generous this term, bringing in a school record amount of donations for Barrow Food Bank.

The Old Vic is a 1,000-seat, however is unable to fill its venue due to current restrictions. Located on Cut and Waterloo Road in Lambeth, the company was established in 1818 as the Royal Coburg Theatre, and renamed in 1833 the Royal Victoria Theatre in 1871. T
