A woman is set to take on a litter pick up Scafell Pike on her 60th birthday to rise vital funds for the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team.
The mountain rescue team has been hit hard this year due to Covid, with money having to be spent on personal protective equipment to be used on rescues.
Annual local fundraising events such as the three Gosforth Road Races and the Lingmell Dash fell race have been cancelled.
With this in mind, Lindsay Buck, known by many locals in the area as Wasdale Womble, has pledged to collect litter on her 60th birthday.
She is regularly seen collecting litter from Scafell Pike and the Wasdale Valley.
She has previously always been a supporter of the mountain rescue team, who have had to deal with a large number of callouts this year in tough Covid related conditions.
A JustGiving page to raise money for Wasdale MRT has been set up.
The fundraising 'Wasdale Womble', said: "My aim is to safely climb Scafell Pike as many times as possible between October 11 2019 and my birthday on the October 11 2020, and to keep both the mountain and the Wasdale valley as clean as possible.
“Many locals clean up including, farmers, the National Trust, Mick Pearce and Dave on the corridor route, but I have also collected many bags from the valley and Scafell Pike.
“As an example, I picked up 522 plastic bottles between May 3 and June 29 and much more beside.
“If you are kind enough to donate, as a bit of fun please guess how many ascents I will make in the comments on the JustGiving page.
“It might help to know 80 days were missed due to the national lock down and our own post Italy isolation.
“Please support this vital volunteer emergency service.
“It would be my best 60th birthday present to have raised funds for WMRT whilst keeping this stunning place tidy.”
Litter is an increasing problem everywhere, and with a large number of visitors to England’s highest mountain we see a lot of litter left behind.
Thanks to people like Lindsay Wasdale and Scafell Pike is kept as clean as possible.j
