THE HIGH Sheriff of Cumbria has thanked members of the community for assisting in the creation of a VE Day tribute.
High Sheriff Julie Barton privately laid red, white and blue flowers at Ulverston Market Cross on the morning of VE Day to remember and celebrate the service and sacrifice of the wartime generation.
Mrs Barton said: “Getting flowers in lockdown was not possible but the local garden centre helped out by making me a planter. However I still couldn’t get any Union flags.
“Croftlands Junior School came to my rescue and made me some flags. They look fantastic and add to the VE Day celebrations.
“It made me feel that the spirit of wartime of helping one another, creative problem solving and tenacity, lives on in lockdown. Thank you to all the pupils who helped.”
