A POP music trivia expert put Millom on the national map when she used her outstanding knowledge to win the UK's best-loved radio quiz.

Milly Wilson was the daily winner on BBC Radio 2's Popmaster, hosted by Ken Bruce every weekday morning.

Milly, who is a volunteer worker for Around the Combe, a support network for elderly residents, gave her home town and her colleagues a shout-out when she appeared on the show on Wednesday.

Popmaster has a cult following around the UK and tests listeners' knowledge of pop music.

Each day two players from different parts of the country go head-to-head via radio phone-in to the studio, to answer 10 questions each.

Milly scored 18 points, defeating an opponent from Dover.

She then correctly gave the names of three UK hits by Blondie to win the '3 in 10' round and earn herself the prize of a digital radio.

“I listen almost every day at work," said Milly, 52.

“Everything stops for Popmaster.

"I won it in 2006 as well.

“Felt great to win, my sister has bagged the digital radio as I’ve got the one, I won previously."

Her correct answers included Will Smith’s original stage name and naming the hit U2 song Vertigo.

Milly has been helping residents during the coronavirus lockdown.

“We do prescription deliveries, taking shopping up for elderly people on our street," she said.

"I can still get out and about."

Milly received many comments of support on social media following her quiz appearance.

“I even got a shout on the Ken Bruce Preservation Society Page on Facebook asking me to join, which of course I did," she said.

“There were lots of lovely comments on there too.

"It doesn’t take much to brighten the mood now as there’s so much uncertainty.

"I was just as pleased that it helped others locally for our town get a shout out."

Milly thanked her friends, family, her fellow workers and Popmaster mate John.
