CONCERNS have been raised at a county council meeting about the future of Millom Network Centre.
The Salthouse Road centre has seen job losses recently with “rumours” circulating about its future management, according to Cllr Doug Wilson.
He spoke out at a meeting of Cumbria County Council and raised questions with the council’s leadership about the centre’s future direction.
Cllr Wilson, of Haverigg, called the centre an “asset” of the community.
He said: “I have had inquiries from a number of local people who are expressing concerns about the future of services delivered by that organisation, given the recent job losses and rumours surrounding the future management of the centre.”
The Conservative councillor for Millom asked for any assurances about the centre, which offers a variety of services for businesses and meeting rooms for community groups, among others.
Cabinet member Cllr David Southward told the meeting there was a litigation process in place following a “dispute” between the centre and Millom School.
Cllr Southward, the cabinet member for economic development and property, said he was restricted in what he could say, but pledged that the centre would go on.
Cllr Southward said: “The whole matter is subject to legal proceedings so I will provide a written response. Irrespective of the outcome of those proceedings, I will do my level best to ensure that all the services offered by the centre are retained and where possible, enhanced. This will happen in the context of a wider county council review into services provided to Millom.”
