KIND-HEARTED Kirkby schoolchildren have received thanks directly from Nepal.
Burlington CE Primary School is twinned with the Khiraule village school and the pupils have
exchanged messages and photographs.
Following the devastating earthquakes in Nepal Burlington School held a “Nepal day” on May 15 that raised £230. The school donated this to the KEHP charity.
The charity supports the village school and provide healthcare. It is chaired by Lhakpa Sherpa and his wife Pat, the KEHP secretary.
Friends living in the Kirkby area are members of the charity or donate towards our ongoing projects.
Kate and Robin Cornah, or Kirkby, are trustees.
Khiraule, in the Everest region of Nepal is four days trek from the nearest airstrip at Phaplu; there are no roads to the village and all supplies have to be carried by porters along
narrow trails.
Lhakpa and Pat visited Burlington School this week to thank the children for supporting the charity and to update them about the pupils and adults in Khiraule ad the projects that have been carried out since the earthquakes.
After the second earthquake 80 per cent of the 75 houses in Khiraule were no longer habitable
and 100 per cent were damaged and in need of repair and/or rebuild.
Lhakpa has recently returned from Nepal where he was helping with relief work, helping injured Sherpas returning from Everest and assisting relief groups to reach remote villages.
He managed to source 100 tarpaulins to send to Khiraule village to be made into shelters against the summer monsoon for the families who can no longer live in their houses.
Fortunately the village school buildings suffered only minor damage so all 85 pupils went back to school at the start of the school year on June 1.
The visitors said a huge thank to all who are helping KEHP.
KEHP operates with no administrative overhead so all money raised is spent only on the village projects.
Mr Cornah said donations at this critical time would be much appreciated so that families can be assisted with the repair and rebuilding of their homes before the winter sets in.
Donations can be made through www.justgiving.com/KEHP which allows KEHP to claim Gift Aid on donations by those who pay income tax. This allows KEHP to claim an additional 25 per cent from the
Government.
