A MAN has been charged after an alleged racist incident at a football match in Cumbria.
Owen Newbury, 18, of Skinburness Drive, Silloth, has been charged with racially/religiously aggravated intentional harassment/alarm/distress by words contrary to Section 4a of the Public Order Act.
The alleged incident occurred following Everton's first goal in the FA Cup match held at Brunton Park, Carlisle, on January 31.
Superintendent Justin Bibby said:
“I’d like to thank the public for their ongoing help and support with this investigation. This was a hate crime that attracted widespread condemnation and our prompt response demonstrates that we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour in Cumbria.”
Newbury will appear before North Cumbria Magistrates Court on 31st May 2016.
