DOG-OWNERS are being urged not to take their pets for a walk on hot pavements.

With the mercury rising this week as Barrow many have reported seeing dogs being taken for a walk on hot pavements.

The ground temperature of paths and pavements tends to be significantly higher than the air temperature. Yesterday in Barrow an air temperature of 30C was matched by 55C on the ground.

The general rule accepted by responsible dog-owners is to hold the back of your hand against the pavement. If you can't hold it for five seconds then it is too hot to walk your dog.

Animal lover Amy White advised on The Mail's Facebook: "If you want to test how hot it is underfoot then take a walk with no shoes or socks on and that will give you a good idea of how your poor dogs feet will feel."
