It Was a great shock when I received a message That Steve ( The Legend ) Calvert had passed away . The last time I saw him My mate Rob Mckeever had arranged a catch up on Walney with some of the guys that I had not seen for years and Steve was there and as always entertaining.
I first met Steve (Cally )when he jumped in my car at the Bay Horse and told me to take him and his mate to Roman House way back in the seventies. I was 17
I then worked with Steve on a shut down at the Mars factory in Slough. Myself, Steve , Kieth Wharton and Jeff Healy all sharing one room.
The soup and custard were free in the canteen so that is how we ate till pay day. Steve said when we pick up our wages you will think it is Vickers fortnight.
Steve always saw the funny side of things and was great entertainment.
We worked every hour we could and walked home together afterwards where over the weeks , Steve taught me all the words to Monty Pythons live at Drury lane. I mean All of them. He always lifted yo when you were having a bad day .
If he did not have a story about a subject he would make one up.
You took everything he said with a pinch of salt and he never took himself seriously.
I was at a local football match and one guy kept shouting Kept shouting Gary this Gary that to one of the payers . Then Steve shouted , Is Gary your fkin Hero of what ? To which the guy replied . No you are Cally . To which Steve replied .
A WISE CHOICE . For those who didn't know Steve he was a good footballer .
He talked an even better game after the match.
The world will not be a better place for the loss of Steve , ( Cally ) Calvert.
My sincere condolences to Linda and his family.
I am not able to attend the service as I am on the other side of the world but would have liked to have shown my respects.
I dare say the stories afterwards will keep everyone entertained.
God bless you Steve and thanks for the leg up in my early years.
