THE world famous Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain will be appearing in Cumbria later this year.
South Lakes Music Partnership has announced its major summer show, in addition to the regular programme, to take place at the Coronation Hall, in Ulverston, on Thursday June 29.
The long-running orchestra has given thousands of sold-out concerts across the world, including Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Poland, France, America, Canada, New Zealand and Japan, and this will be their first appearance in Ulverston for five years.
The group of all-singing, all-strumming ukulele players perform a funny, virtuosic, twanging, awesome, foot-stomping entertainment – a collision of post-punk performance and toe-tapping oldies.
There are no drums, pianos, backing tracks or banjos, no pitch shifters or electronic trickery, only the rich palette of orchestration afforded by ukuleles and singing - and a bit of whistling.
The orchestra started as a bit of fun in 1985, but since then there have been thousands of sell-out gigs all over the world, as well as TV and radio appearances.
Their music has been used in films, plays, and commercials, while film clips of the Orchestra’s live concerts and TV appearances on websites such as YouTube have been watched millions of times. Collaborators have also included Madness, The Kaiser Chiefs and The Ministry Of Sound.
Their different perspectives and styles co-exist in one varied yet harmonious show.
Hopping between Tchaikovsky and Nirvana, via Otis Redding and Spaghetti Western soundtracks, the orchestra have picked up fans of all genres, all over the world.
They released four albums in 2016 alone, including a collection of world music from the period of the First World War, their take on the 20th Century's biggest punk rock anthems, and their first album of entirely original material.
