LEADING international photographer and artist Mishka Henner is the latest high-profile guest to visit Furness as part of the new digital arts programme Lost Stations.
Born in Belgium and based in Manchester, he is redefining the role of photography in the internet age, and his work is held in the Tate Collection, the Centre Pompidou, Victoria and Albert Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York.
On Thursday June 15, he will be at Cooke's Studios, in Barrow, to talk about his incredible 15-year career, which has seen him shortlisted for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize.
His appearance will see him become the fourth acclaimed artist to appear in Signal Film and Media's latest year-long programme.
Renowned for his interrogative approach to the medium of photography, Henner has been a pioneer in the use of internet, satellites and television imagery as a source for his artistic practice. The omnipresent and infinite bank of these publicly available images serves as a tool for Henner to force us to question how the internet age has so rapidly transformed our visual experience.
Through the use of technologies such as Google Earth, Henner exploits the surveillant, voyeuristic and somewhat god-like advantages of such platforms to see anything, anywhere in the world, by almost anyone at anytime.
Everyone is welcome to the event, and there will also be a chance to enjoy a drink, a chat and to view the current Lost Stations Digital Art exhibition, which features the work of 10 emerging Cumbrian artists.
Lost Stations project manager Joanna Roy says: “We are immensely excited to have such a globally-recognised talent join us here at Cooke’s Studios.
"Mishka Henner’s name continues to be at the forefront of cutting-edge photography, redefining what this medium means in the world of today. This is not to be missed by anyone interested in photography or digital art”
Mishka Henner’s talk is part of the ambitious year-long Lost Stations programme, delivered by Signal Film and Media, which is bringing a whole host of opportunities to Barrow throughout this year.
In the next four months alone, the Lost Stations programme will see international artists Rachel Maclean, Marshmallow Laser Feast and Christopher Bucklow also visit the town.
Alongside the exhibition, the programme includes two new digital art commissions, eight international artist talks and an extensive community engagement programme.
The event on Thursday 15 will start at 6.30pm, and admission is free.
