WORK is underway this week on the demolition of Morecambe’s iconic Polo Tower – the last thing standing on the former Frontierland fairground site which will have been visited by thousands of Furness daytrippers.
To mark this end of an era – to make way for a £17m shopping development – we have a selection of pictures taken by the Evening Mail during the visit of travelling fairs to Barrow and Walney.
The Polo Tower is 168ft tall and started life in 1974 as the Space Tower at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.
It was moved to Morecambe to make way for the Big One rollercoaster.
The tower, sponsored by Polo mints, opened in 1995 and had a revolving circular platform which went up and down the tower.
Frontierland closed in 2000 and the rest of the site was cleared for redevelopment.
The tower should vanish by the end of the month.
