THE EVENING Mail reported the success of the 50th Alithwaite carnival.
Despite the heavy rain, Alithwaite held its 50th carnival on Saturday, and many people defied the weather to watch the procession and see the dancing troupes perform.
The Carnival Queen Samantha Bird was crowned by Mrs Shury, the first carnival queen in 1938, who said the ceremony brought back many happy memories.
She wished Samantha a happy year.
The queen's attendants were Ladies in waiting Lowella Babbester, Rachael Bird, Flowergirls - Mary Houston, Gemma Wilkinson.
The pageboys were Neil Turner, Carl Percy, and the crown bearer was Craig Turner.
Prize Winners included Floats which were judged by Mr and Mrs Hunter: Prettiest was Teddy Bear's picnic.
The most original was Alithwaite C and E School.
Retine was the Queen's float.
Costumes of the dancing troupes were judged by Mr and Mrs Colin Burron.
The Prettiest winner was HMS Imperial School of Dancing, second place was Up County, and third was Sunday Best from the Imperial School of Dancing.
The most original winner was Annie's Wild West Show from the Imperial School of Dancing, second place went to Ugly Buf Ball by Barbara French and third place went to Fever by the Imperial School of Dancing.
Dancing troupes were judged by Mrs Sandra Wilson and Miss Heather Wilson, six and under Sunday Best Imperial School of Dancing.
Second place went to Back in Time, Barbara French School of Dancing, and third went to Uncle Bulgaria's Gang, Miss J Wright.
Seven-nine years: first place went to Yankee Minstrels, Barbara French of School of Dancing, second place went to Krypton Crime busters of Imperial School of Dancing, and third London Way by Miss J Wright.
Dancing Mums first place went to Roley Poleys from Barbara French School of Dancing. Second place went to The Manhattan Mob by Imperial School of Dancing, and third place went to the Star Maidens by Nellie English.
