MODERN day Barrow Raiders hero Liam Harrison stands on the threshold of a major Craven Park milestone.
Testimonial man Harrison is set to make his 300the Barrow appearance at Doncaster and he hopes to cap it with at least one touchdown as his side look to progress in the Super 8s tomorrow (kick-off 3pm).
That appearance will see him stand just one position outside Barrow’s top-20, with his remarkable run of starting every Raiders game he has appeared in and having never being used as a substitute making for a unique feat in the modern game.
He has also moved into the top-10 all-time list of Barrow try-scorers after notching his 119th touchdown against Oxford earlier this month, ahead of legends Willie Horne and Jack Grundy.
Harrison now shares in the select club along with the likes of chart-topper Jimmy Lewthwaite, with 354 touchdowns, and former favourite James Nixon, in at seventh with 137 tries.
He is just six behind former Raiders favourite Phil Atkinson, who holds ninth position with 125.
While Harrison is delighted to be hitting those landmarks, he is concentrating on the game in hand in South Yorkshire, and believes Barrow have come good just at the right time as they bid to secure a play-off place and a tilt at securing one of the two spots in the Championship.
“It is obviously a nice milestone to hit, “ said Harrison of his appearances. “I would have liked it to have been at home, unfortunately I have to travel down to South Yorkshire, if selected.”
The 32-year-old is also keen to add to his try tally, and said: “I’ll try. I’ll make sure everyone knows they have got to pass to me if we’re in the clear!
“But being behind Phil Atkinson is no shame whatsoever, he is a fantastic player in his own right and a great servant to Barrow.
“I will certainly try and pip Acky if I can because it is bragging rights of course, but I am not too focused on that, it is making sure we win and making sure I play my part.
“If I get a few more tries, that would be the icing on the cake.”
Harrison had a big say in Barrow’s stunning 34-12 victory over Rochdale Hornets on Sunday, achieved with 12 men following a late first-half dismissal of packman Danny Morrow.
He said: “It was really pleasing, we spoke about it after the game among ourselves. For me it was just something we haven’t really had in any of the games I have played in this year, like the spirit and wanting to play for each other, especially the commitment when we went down to 12 men which was unfortunate, I felt a bit sorry for Dan.
“It was how we performed, we actually played to our structures and when we got instructions we listened to them.”
Despite narrowly losing 21-18 to Doncaster in the league earlier this season, Harrison feels Barrow will be fired up for the second round tie at the weekend.
“We’re ready to crack on for the rest of the season and try and get some good results,” said Harrison. “I think the confidence that we take from a game (against Rochdale) where we dominated from start to finish I can’t see it dropping and I say that on behalf of the players, I just get the feeling that everyone is up for it now.
“The intention among the team is to win every game, I don’t think even Toulouse really scare us now.
“I think we will probably be the team to watch out for in the competition.”
