At 10.37am yesterday, fire crews raced to the Asda car park in Walney Road, Barrow, to tackle a blaze that had engulfed four cars.
Thick black smoke which billowed into the air alerted shoppers to the emergency after triggering the shop’s smoke alarms.
Firefighters from Barrow battled the blaze with four hose reels as they fought to keep the fire from spreading to other cars.
In the aftermath, social media was flooded with praise for the brave firefighters whose quick actions prevented an already dangerous situation deteriorating.
It is understood no-one was hurt during the fire.
The cars were later seen being loaded onto a flatbed lorry and taken away.
A spokesman for Cumbria police said the fire brigade were taking the lead in the investigation, and the fire was not being treated as suspicious.
Anyone with information should contact the police via 101, quoting log number 58 of July 18.
