A BARROW school has followed in the footsteps of adventurous children from a hit British movie filmed in the Lake District.

Year Five pupils from Roose School took to Coniston Water in canoes to reenact scenes from the remake of Swallows and Amazons which made its big screen debut in August.

The youngsters had been reading the book written by Arthur Ransome since June and Year Two teacher Angela Bell discussed the possibility of going to the Lake District to follow in the footsteps of the characters.

Mrs Bell, a keen fell walker, made arrangements with outdoor group Real Adventure and quickly put plans into motion to get the trip sorted for September.

She said: "We'd been talking about the film and thought it would be nice to do it get an older class out to Peel Island and re-enact the whole thing.

"It was absolutely fantastic and everyone really got into the spirit of it and we were able to see all of the landmarks from the film."

Year Five teacher Helen Mackie's class were chosen as the lucky pupils to be treated to the full Swallows and Amazons experience.

As part of the day they assembled canoes and rowed them out to Peel Island in groups and then set up a camp fire using petroleum jelly and fire sticks.

Mrs Mackie said: "I think they appreciated that local connection. It's obviously based around Windermere and Coniston and these lakes are on the doorsteps for a lot of our pupils. It really was an exciting day for them.

"The team building and the canoeing gave them a real sense of what it would have been like to have been out there in the wilderness on their own and the produced some beautiful pieces of literature the next day in class recalling their experiences out on the island.

"If you just sit in a classroom it's not real and they're not properly experiencing it.

"Next year we will probably do the same thing again because it's been such a success."

The school was helped massively by the Furness Lions club who donated £300 towards the cost of transport, instructors and equipment.

Mrs Bell added: "We are really grateful for their contribution - it wouldn't have been possible without them."
