A cat has miraculously survived being driven to a Barrow home in a car engine during a Sunday morning shopping trip.

A local couple had been shopping at Asda on Walney Road on April 21 and spotted a feline in front of their car.

They thought it had then run off however when they arrived at their home at Seymour Court, around half a mile away, they could hear meowing.

They took a look underneath the car and saw the cat completely trapped between the wheel and in the engine bay.

The Mail: The car had to jacked up to remove the catThe pair acted immediately and contacted a woman called Norma who runs the Barrow Lost and Found pets Facebook group.

Alex Reid, 51, who is an RSPCA volunteer, was then contacted.

Alex said: "My husband Darren and I went out and there was no way to free the cat's head.

"My husband jacked the car up, and then had to remove the wheel and another part of the car so we could free her.

"She was a bit stressed but luckily had no injuries.

"It could have been a very different story. The way her head was wedged between the metal - it could have been fatal.

"Darren was the real hero of the day."

The Mail: The cat has ran in front of the car in Asda car parkIn total, the rescue took around two hours and the front wheel of the car had to be fully removed.

In that time, the owner had spotted the post on Facebook and arrived just as the volunteers managed to get her out.

She confirmed that the cat's name is Mallory and said: "We are just so overwhelmed by everyone’s help on the day.

"She’s absolutely fine now, not a scratch on her - and walking around the house like butter wouldn’t melt.

"The kids and I are very relieved and happy to have her home safely."

The Mail: Mildred back home safe in her owner's armsA member of the RSPCA later confirmed that Mallory's microchip hadn't been working properly.

Mallory's owner added: "I’m so glad I saw that post on Facebook otherwise we may not have seen her again.

"I need to get the chip working in case anything happens in the future.

"Obviously we won’t be letting her out if we can help it. She’s given us all such a fright."

Alex added: "All cats must be chipped by June 10 as it becomes a legal requirement.

"If your cat is chipped and you want to check it, ask at your vet appointment, or for example when you go for annual vaccinations."
