FURNESS Model Aircraft Society joined other clubs around the country for a world record attempt to mark a special 100 year centenary.

This summer the British Model Flying Association (BMFA), formerly the Society of Model Aeronautical Engineers, will celebrate its centenary and mark the 100th year as the body responsible for UK model flying.

To commemorate the milestone, BMFA Centenary will be attempting to set a new world record.

This will be a mass participation model flying record attempt for clubs and individual members which is to be set at various flying sites and recorded locally.

Model planes, gliders, drones and helicopters took flight on mass in the world record attempt nationally on Sunday May 15 at midday to mark the 100 year centenary of model flying and the BMFA association.

Furness Model Aircraft Society, which operates from its flying site on Rakesmoor Lane, Barrow, joined the national record attempt with as many flyers in the air at midday as safely possible.

The club joined other clubs across the country to celebrate the centenary of the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) and the hobby of model flying. The club took part in the record attempt and will provide photos, videos as evidence along with other clubs to count towards the world record.

Seven-year-old Joe Gardiner was among the event-goers who took part in the record attempt by flying his plane.

The current record stands at 180 flyers but the flying clubs across the nation are hoping to more than double that total.

The club is always looking to interest new members, especially the younger generation or anyone who would like to know more about the hobby and the art of model flying.

Anyone interested in finding out more can contact the club facebook group (Furness Model Aircraft Society) or contact info at the BMFA website.

Special thanks go to all that participated, the Farm owners and family of Rakesmoor Farm for their continued support of the club granting the society permission to fly at the site.
