Team GB's outstanding performance in the Rio Olympics has made us all feel rather patriotic and has succeeded in uniting the county behind our amazing athletes.

This year we seem to have been especially successful in the pool and when diving into it! Rio 2016 saw the nation fall in love with down-to-earth breast stroker Adam Peaty, who broke the world record over 100 metres.

A silver medal for Jack Laugher marked Britain’s third medal in diving at the Olympic Games with Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow winning 10m synchro bronze and also Team GB’s 50th medal of Rio 2016 overall. Daley has hit his prime for this year's games. His diving partner Goodfellow often doesn't get the same celebrity treatment but is just as inspirational when he gets on that board.

Jack Laugher struck again when diving with his team partner Chris Mears when they won gold in the nerve-jangling three-metre synchronised diving. The pair dived into a pool which had become a hot topic of conversation in Rio due to its unusual acid-green colour.

A summer holiday diving workshop at Ulverston Leisure Centre has seen enthusiasm rise in line with Olympics fever. Ulverston swimming instructor Gail Whiteley, of Dorchester Crescent, said: "We have had two different levels of divers in this week, the really young ones I have just been teaching how to enter the water head-first rather than landing in the water like a pancake but the older group have been working more on style and streamlining.

"Obviously this is a totally different type of diving to what athletes like Tom Daly have been excelling at in Rio but I think that the success Team GB have had in the diving and the swimming has really encouraged more youngsters to get into the pool.

"Michael Phelps would not be using the same techniques as Tom Daly but this week the children have been working on getting their best start in their race."

When it comes to heroes, Gail has been an inspiration to many children herself and was named in the Heart of Ulverston 2015 awards for her courage. She has been just as impressed by the actions of Adam Peaty in the Olympics and agrees that there could not be a better role model for young swimmers in the south Cumbria area. She said: "Adam Peaty's performance was absolutely awe-inspiring, as were the divers who did such an incredible job this year.

"I have definitely noticed a lot of the older children have been talking to me about the Olympics and I think that watching these athletes in the pool competing in a Team GB hat is very inspiring for them.

"Breast stroke is the most difficult stroke you can teach a swimmer and I would say Adam's performance will definitely inspire youngsters to work harder at learning it."

One of the most important things about the Olympic Games is to inspire people all over the world to take part in more sports and the legacy of the games hopes to keep people young and old getting involved for the next four years.

In Great Britain we take particular pride in our cycling, equestrian, swimming and diving teams.

Gail said: "Sports can be so uplifting and as somebody who has taught swimming for so long I know it is something that children can grow up with and take with them throughout their lives. In my opinion getting out to play sports is much more important than sitting at home playing on an iPad."
