This week the haute couture fashion houses will showcase their latest collections in our capital city.
As supermodels fly in from all over the world to walk in London Fashion Week and socialites don their finest attire to grace the front rows of the catwalk shows I always wonder how many of the 'key trends' will actually be wearable for the average woman.
Unfortunately there is only a tiny percentage of women who can wear the high fashion clothes designed for the runway and these women are usually 5ft11 and size six. To follow the new season trends, high street brands have to make clothes a little more conservative and easier for women to wear in real life.
I excluded some of the more ridiculous trends such as the marabou feathered tutus seen at the David Ferreira show or mountains of unflattering ruffles seen at Roberto Cavalli. Instead I concentrated on wearable styles and was helped by local Boutique owner and fashion enthusiast Helen Hutchinson. Ms Hutchinson is the owner of Ulverston based boutique Jute. With her help I found some catwalk worthy looks that could be worn easily this Spring and Summer for anything from a day at the races to a barbecue.
London Fashion Week's most wearable trends:
- As seen at Emilio Pucci and Celine. Although many fashion houses take the sheer lace look to the extreme, it can be done far more demurely. We found the perfect elegant evening dress from Garcia Jeans which had a sheer lace overlay. The dress is available in Jute for £79.99.
- This trend has been huge for the last couple of seasons and seems to still be going strong. The easiest way to wear it is with a dress that is shorter at the front than at the back. We found a beautiful summery white dress from Religion which cost £85.00. Another take on the style was a checked French Connection dress which also sported an on-trend sheer panel on the décolletage. This dress was modeled by Boutique owner Ms Hutchinson and retailed at £90.00.
- As seen at Gucci among many others, wide legged, baggier trousers were a favourite off the catwalk too. Fashion conscious celebs rocked the look as they turned up to show. Ronan Keating's wife Storm rocked a pair in Mayfair this week for the Julian Macdonald show and last week Sports Illustrated cover girl Hayley Clauson showed off a more summery take on the trousers in white silk. In Jute I found the perfect pair for Spring/Summer '16 that were both comfortable and versatile. They could be worn for casual occasions or dressed up with heels. The trend goes well with a crop top but can be worn with any plain vest top. They were French Connection and retailed at £85.00.
