SHOCKED neighbours crowded outside their homes after a lorry container became wedged under a bridge in Barrow.
Cumbria police and Cumbria County Council attended the incident which occurred around 2.30pm today in Marsh Street, Barrow.
The lorry belonging to Barrow removal company A1 Removals became stuck under Greengate Street Bridge, after it attempted to fit under a 10 metre bridge which resulted in the container becoming trapped.
Neighbours described hearing a loud bang outside of their homes and rushed out to find the container wedged under the bridge.
Patricia Kenrick of Marsh Street, said: "I was just in my house when all of a sudden I heard a massive bang. I thought one of my neighbour's shelves had fallen down. I looked out of my window and saw that thing sat there.
"I think most people heard the bang and came out to look what was happening, everyone was taking pictures. No one rushed over to make sure the driver was okay."
The empty van was on its way to collect an oven from a nearby street.
Dean Evans, of Ramsden Street, Barrow, said: "I was up Ramsden Street and was messing around with my van and I just heard this massive bang. It has been there a while now."
Furness Cars and Commercials attended the scene and the container was pulled from under the bridge and taken away at around 6.00pm.
Fortunately no one was injured in the incident.
