THE Cumbrian Railways Association had hundreds of transport-related pictures on its stall at last weekend’s Preston Model Railway Exhibition, including this view of Seascale station.

It shows the steam locomotive 92077 taking empty coal wagons back towards the mines at Whitehaven on July 28 in 1967.

The loco was built at the Crewe Works and was based at the Carnforth loco shed.

It would have been a regular sight on the Barrow to Millom coastal line until it was withdrawn from service on June 30 in 1968.

It was designed by Robert Riddles and built in 1956 as a 9F type of locomotive for heavy mineral traffic – largely coal or iron ore.

It was sold to be cut up for scrap in October 1968.

The Cumbrian Railways Association has a huge archive of railway pictures, maps and plans and is organising a spring talks day at the Hallmark Hotel, Carlisle, on Saturday, May 19.

You can find out more than about the meeting and other events and services from the association – which is celebrating its 40th anniversary – on the website at www.cumbrianrailways.org.uk

The association’s stand was among other enthusiast groups and model railway groups with layouts and stalls at the two-day event in Preston College.

Layouts included the North Holderness Light Railway based on the East Riding of Yorkshire in the 1950s; Ynysafan based on a coal route in the Rhondda before 1920, Annan Road modelling a terminus station in Scotland in the 1960s and Burghead, based on a Scottish harbour station in the 1960s.

The highlight of the year for many South Cumbrian miniature rail enthusiasts is the model railway and transport exhibition held on October 8 and 9.

This 54th show is being organised by Furness Model Railway and Transport Club at Barrow Sixth Form College, on Rating Lane.

The mix of railway layouts, model engineering and stands from traders and preservation societies is open from 10am to 5pm on both days.

Another big county show is the Solrail Workington Model Railway Exhibition, which is being held at Energus, at Blackwood Road, Lillyhall, near Workington, on Saturday and Sunday, November 19 and 20.

The York Model Railway Show is being held in the Knavesmore Stand at York Racecourse on Easter Saturday to Monday, from 10am to 5pm, and features 40 working layouts.

The Merchant Taylors School at Liverpool Road, Crosby, is the venue for the Liverpool Model Railway Exhibition on Saturday, April 23, from 10am to 5pm and on Sunday, April 24, from 10am to 4.30pm.

A model railway exhibition with 20 model layouts is being held at the Museum of Transport in Boyle Street, Manchester, from 10am to 5pm, on May 21 to 22.

The Blackburn and East Lancashire Model Rail Show is from 10am to 5pm on September 3 and 4 at the Hyndburn Leisure Centre, Henry Street, Church, Accrington.

Blackpool and North Fylde Model Railway Club has its annual exhibition with at least 20 layouts on Saturday, September 17, from 10am to 5pm, and on Sunday, September 18, from 10am to 4pm.
