THE locomotives, carriages and wagons of the Barrow-based Furness Railway were faithfully and painstaking recreated by Ross Pochin and Bill Shillcock.

They were pioneer members of the Manchester Model Railway Club and produced their models over a period of 18 years.

Four of their locomotives, five carriages and several wagons will be on display this Saturday and Sunday, October 8 and 9, at the Furness Model Railway Club's model railway and transport exhibition at Barrow Sixth Form College.

The model makers make all their own parts, even down to the wheels.

They won many awards at Manchester model railway exhibitions and in 2008 their collection was purchased by the Cumbrian Railways Association.

It displays them at a exhibitions throughout the North of England.

Philip Tuer, modelling coordinator of the Cumbrian Railways Association said: “The standard of modelling is of the highest level and even today they are as good as, if not better than those current mainstream manufacturers are producing”.

The Cumbrian Railways Association was started in 1976 to promote interest in the county's railway history.

It holds two conferences a year in the county for its 440 members, plus outdoor visits.

More information can be found on its website at www.cumbrianrailways.org.uk

There will be plenty more to see at Barrow Sixth Form College at the weekend.

It is open from 10am to 5pm on both days and there will be a shuttle bus service to the Rating Lane site from Barrow Railway Station and Barrow Town Hall.

Expected layouts include Charlewood, Cardinal Falls, Parrot Hall, Crow Tree Depot, Westmorland Bay and Chaple Wood. You can find out more on the website at http://furnessmrc.webs.com/exhibition.htm
